Ready for iOS 6

Tomorrow is the big day when everyone will update from iOS 5 to the next generation iOS 6. With this new update, you may have questions about how well our apps will work with this new operating system. In short, iOS 6 works very well with our suite of Hurricane Tracking Apps, as well as Traveler’s Quest and Cat Calls. Each app has been extensively tested over the last few months and we believe you will be happy with the results. While we know the new Maps interface will a big change from the current Google Maps in iOS 5, we believe that our apps continue to look spectacular with the new base maps. Some areas will need to be zoomed in farther than you are used to to get the detail you may be looking for.

As always, if you would like to speak to us about our apps, please use our Support Form and we will help you as quickly as we can.

Thank you for using our suite of Apps, created just for you!

Getting the Most Out of Hurricane

20120827-123735.jpgHurricane and Hurricane Express have a great feature which allows you to refresh the storm data for all storms at any time. Just go to the storm names page, and pull the menu down with your finger. When you do, you will see something like the image here and when you let go it will refresh and update the last refresh time. The NHC is updating on 3 hour intervals right now, 10am, 1pm, 4pm, 7pm, 10pm, 1am and 4am CDT. They will continue with 3 hour intervals while there are watches and/or warnings posted.

Follow Friday and Emergency Managers

Being a part of the community that needs to get important information out to every day people is a huge responsibility. Trying to get that information out in the most direct way possible is always a large undertaking as well, but there are ways for us to take a moment to share important resources with one another.

When a crisis is happening @CraigatFEMA does a lot of retweeting of important information. What if the sources of that information were shared each Friday as a #FF tweet? It would take a few minutes, and would create a web of accounts for people to follow. If the accounts are descriptive enough, it will be very easy to decipher who belongs where… An example would be:

#FF Central FL #SMEM @NWSTampaBay @PinellasEM @NWSMelbourne @BrevardEOC @OrangeCountyEOC

By adding the surrounding emergency management accounts, and those accounts adding their surrounding accounts, it enables everyone to not only connect, but share the information you’re trying to get out.

I tried to start this today, but hope that if not today, then next Friday we can start this ball rolling and really get connected with our communities.

Please take a moment to share this information with other emergency managers that you know so that we can ensure that everyone knows how to get the official information for their areas.
